The primary objective of the foundation was to provide Neurosurgical treatment with standards comparable to anywhere in the world. This is being achieved by recruiting highly-skilled and experienced staff and bringing the best tools and the specialized knowledge base built up through years of experience. Neurosurgery Department was started in 1996 with all the facilities that are essential for modern Neurosurgery. The Department was one of the first in Kerala in the private sector to have neurosurgical operating microscope and CUSA imported from the United States. The combination of ethical and not for profit work, latest equipment constant encouragement do achieve the best results attracted many highly skilled and qualified neurosurgeons who are trained in some of the best institutes in India and abroad.  The quality of care, the postoperative outcome and the lower overall cost compared to corporate hospital continue to attract patients here for their treatment. More than 9000 major neurosurgical procedures have been done at IAH with results comparable or better than any other center in the world.

Most commonly performed brain surgeries are for brain tumours, clipping of cerebral aneurysms, excision of AVMs, congenital conditions of the brain and for traumatic brain injury and intracranial hematomas. Amongst the spine surgeries, cervical and lumbar disc surgeries, degenerative spine surgeries, surgeries for spinal tumours, spinal injuries and fractures and minimally invasive spine surgeries are the most commonly performed ones.

Dr. Kumar Bahuleyan
Founder & Prof. Emeritus

Overview:
Dr. K. Bahuleyan did his MBBS from Govt. Medical College Madras in the year 1954 and did his FRCS (Edinburgh) and FRCS (Glasgow) in the year 1962 & 1964 from UK and he completed his MD from US. Dr. Bahuleyan was the first Neurosurgeon of the State of Kerala. He started as Asst. Professor of Neurological Surgery at Govt. Medical College, Trivandrum. He joined the Indian Defense Forces as its first Neurosurgeon in the year 1964. He later moved to Buffalo in New York State and worked as a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Asst. Professor of Neurosurgery till 1996. He started Indo American Hospital in the year 1998 and has been working as Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and Professor Emeritus since then.

Overview:
Education and Training

Dr. Jain George graduated from Government Medical College Trichur, Kerala, India in 1991 and did his Masters in General Surgery (M.S.) from Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. His Neurosurgery training started while at BHU where he did dissertation in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and electives in Neurosurgery.

After passing M.S. General Surgery Examinations in 1995, he joined All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS, New Delhi) as Senior Resident in Neurosurgery. After a year he left AIIMS and joined at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum, India and completed Masters in Neurosurgery (M.Ch.) in the year 1999. He had training in Neuro trauma from NIMHANS Bangalore. After passing United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) and ECFMG certification, Dr. Jain George went to United States to do a Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery from Children’s Hospital Michigan in the year 2000-2001. During this fellowship he had advanced hands on clinical training in the management of hydrocephalus, exposure to various shunt systems and its evaluation, pediatric brain tumors, neuro-navigation systems, surgical management of various congenital anomalies of the brain and spine. He used to work part time at Harper University Hospital to get advanced training in Spine Surgery and Skull Base Surgery as well. To gain additional experience and master the perfect techniques of brain tumor surgery, he joined for a Clinical Fellowship in Neurosurgical Oncology at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute, affiliated to University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. In 2012, Dr. George has done a visiting fellowship in Neurosurgery from Fujita Health University, Japan focusing on Vascular Neurosurgery and Endoscopic and Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery. Dr. Jain George also holds an MBA Degree awarded by University of Wales, Cardiff, UK. His dissertation was on Financial Implications of Hospital Accreditation.

Professional Experience

Dr. Jain George has been involved in Neurosurgical patient care at various capacities since 1992. He worked three years as Lecturer and Consultant Neurosurgeon at University Sains Malaysia, where he was teaching postgraduate students, performed hundreds of complex neurosurgical procedures, and started epilepsy surgery program as well. During his clinical fellowship training program in the United States, he has performed hundreds of brain and spine surgeries using the latest equipment and systems. In 2006, he joined at Armed Forces Hospital Southern Region in Saudi Arabia as Consultant Neurosurgeon and was Chief of Neurosurgery for three years there. He has also worked at Royal Commission Hospital in Saudi Arabia and Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar.
His areas of interest include removing brain tumors with no complications adopting the most minimally invasive and keyhole concepts, Cerebrovascular Surgery (Aneurysm and AVM), Pediatric Neurosurgery, Spinal Tumors, Microdiscectomy and Endoscopic Neurosurgery.

Overview:
Dr. Anu Thomas did his MBBS in year 1995 from Govt. Medical College and MS Ortho from Govt. Medical College Calicut in the year 1999. He completed his M.Ch in Neurosurgery from Govt. Medical College Kottayam in 2004. and also did his DNB. He has worked as Asst. Professor in Neurosurgery at Govt. Medical Colleges for 6 years, as consultant Neurosurgeon at Ananthapuri Hospital, Trivandrum for 5 years and has been the Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon & Director of Spine Surgery since 2010.

Dr. Sajeev S Vadakkedam completed his MBBS degree in the year 2000 from Govt. Medical College, Kottayam. He obtained MS in General Surgery in 2005 and MCH Neurosurgery in 2008, both from Government medical College Kottayam. He underwent Post-Doctoral Certificate Course (PDCC) in advanced spine surgery at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. He worked as Senior Resident at Medical College, Kottayam and Senior Lecturer at AIMS, Cochin before joining Indo- American Hospital as Consultant Neurosurgeon in the year 2011.

Dr. B. Syam graduated from the Govt. Medical College Trivadrum in 1998 and he obtained MS in General Surgery in year 2002 from the Motilal Nehru Medical College, Allahabad. He worked as Associate Consultant, Neuro Surgery at the Mar Baselious Mission Hospital, Kothamangalam, Care Hospital, Visakapattanam & Hindhuja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mumbai. Dr. Syam worked as Asst. Professor, Neurosurgery at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. Before joining IAH in 2017, he has worked as Consultant Neurosurgeon at PRS Hospital, Trivandrum & Lisie Hospital, Ernakulam.

There are five operating rooms,  and equipments include two OPMI® PENTERO® 900 Microscopes from ZEISS (2014,2017), CUSA, Endoscope, Ziehm Vision FD Vario 3D Image Intensifier (2017), Allen Advance Radiolucent Spine Table (2017), multiple pneumatic and electric craniotomes and drill system (Midas Rex and Anspach), all micro instruments, endoscopes for key hole surgeries, stereotactic system,   ICP monitor etc. With the state of the art equipment and surgeon’s skill, the complications are reduced to very minimum and   patients get the benefit of less hospital stay, reduced cost and early return to work or routine life.  Minimally invasive and key hole surgeries   performed whenever possible and appropriate, focusing on maximum functional preservation, minimal medications and reduce hospital stay.
